Podcasts are audio files that you can listen to on your computer, or on a portable media player like an iPod or any other MP3 player.

Podcasts work using RSS feeds to deliver you the latest file. There are many ways to subscribe to a podcast, but one of the simplest is:

iTunes

iTunes is software that works with the iPod, but you don’t need an iPod to use iTunes.

You can subscribe to podcasts using iTunes several ways.

1. From the iTunes store

Search for the name or the subject of the podcast you’re interested in. For instance, to find Jump In, just search for “Jump In”.

You’ll see a whole bunch of stuff. Just find the one listed under “podcasts” and hit “subscribe!

iTunes will now automatically download the latest episode of the podcast. You’ll then be able to find it in your podcast directory:

(You can see a video tutorial here)

Here’s another way:

2. Cutting and pasting the feed URL

When you find a podcast – again, let’s take Jump In (audio) as an example – click on the RSS feed icon. The one we use is

You’ll see something like this:

You could take the easy way, and simply press “Add to iTunes” … or you could copy the feed address, go to iTunes, choose “Advanced” from the menu and choose “Subscribe to podcast”.

It’ll bring up a box. Paste the address in the box, and voila! You’re subscribed.

—

There are plenty more ways to subscribe to podcasts. You could simply use an RSS reader, or one of the many other free podcatchers you’ll find here or here.

But did you know you can subscribe to regular updates of videos?

There are many ways; here are two of them.

1. iTunes

This is just the same as subscribing to a podcast in iTunes.

2. Miro

Miro is a fantastic way to subscribe to videos and bring them all together on your computer.

To subscribe to Jump In! on Miro, first of all download Miro from GetMiro.com.

Then, click the video feed button on iJump.co.nz:

You should see a page like this:

Copy the address, and then open Miro.

Go to the top menu, choose “Channels” and then click “Add Channel”

Paste in the address you copied.

Now you should see something like this:

When it’s done downloading, you can watch Jump In! in full screen glory!

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (among other things). We think of it as the love child of email and bookmarks.

Bookmarks let you save a website address to view later … but do you?

Email shows you what you haven’t read because it’s bold.

RSS does both!

Bookmarks the site so you can read it later

Shows you when the site has new content

Step by step

When you click on the RSS feed of this, or any site – it looks like this – it will take you to a page like this:

The page is asking you to choose a web-based news reader, also known as an RSS reader or Feed Reader. We use Google reader to keep on top of our RSS feeds. Here are a couple of reviews of web-based RSS readers.

Let’s use Google reader as an example. If you choose a feed reader and it turns out bad, you can easily export your feeds from most readers, and import them into another reader.

Once you subscribe

Okay, so let’s say you clicked “Add to Google”. You’ll get this screen:

Google lets you choose between adding a page to your iGoogle homepage, or adding to Google Reader. Let’s go with Google Reader.

Most feed readers will require you to set up an account, which means you’ll be able to login to your feeds from any web browser.

(If you don’t want to use a web-based reader, there are a few desktop readers available. There’s a list of them at the end of this article.)

If you have an account already with Google, here’s what you’ll see:

You’ll see the latest post of the page you’ve just subscribed to.

You’ll also see on the left hand side, a list of your feeds, and how many new posts there are on each feed. You’re set now. Just don’t forget to bookmark the reader page so you can come back and check your feeds often!

(For more about Google reader, check out these introductory tips or some more advanced advice.)

iJump.co.nz is a live website. That means we’re constantly adding new content, and you can get notified every time we put new information on iJump in one of four easy ways:

1 Subscribe to our RSS feed

Simply click the orange button:

…and add it to the RSS reader of your choice.

(What’s an RSS reader?)

2. Subscribe to email updates

Simply pop your email address into the box at the right and press “subscribe”. We’ll send you an email to confirm this is really your address, and once you confirm it, you’ll get an email with new content on iJump.

3. Subscribe to the Jump In! video feed

Want to see it, not read it? Just subscribe to our free, weekly video podcast. This works the same as other RSS feeds, but you can also add it to a program like iTunes or Miro that lets you watch videos.

This is the audio-only version of Jump In! – so you can stay on top of the latest trends while you’re on the go. Add the RSS feed to your reader, to iTunes or any other podcatching software.
