In New Zealand, up to 100,000 people are logging into a social networking service that most marketers have never heard of.

It’s SkyKiwi.com, the news and information portal that also boasts a Facebook-style social network for New Zealand’s Chinese-speaking community.

Marie’s talked about other Chinese social media on today’s Breakfast on One, but not many (English-speaking) people know about the Chinese social media site in our own backyard. We decided to find out more, and interviewed SkyKiwi’s CEO, Kylie Liu.

Click here to view the embedded video.

SkyKiwi.com has more than 80,000 registered users and 3000 unique visits per day, according to Kylie.

You can read all about the major social networks in China (where Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are blocked, among many other sites).

Also mentioned by Marie this morning:

The Auckland Public Transport animation that’s been a viral hit in New Zealand

The Onyas, the oscars for web development in New Zealand

Some New Zealand companies are using China’s version of Twitter, Sina Weibo, including Tourism NZ, Zespri, and Air New Zealand. In fact, Air New Zealand recently launched an account specifically for it’s Chinese-speaking customers in New Zealand.

While Vodafone NZ has one primary person driving its Twitter account, Telecom has taken a team approach with its Online Response Team (ORT).

Telecom’s Rebecca Smith is in marketing, and therefore in charge of pulling together the ORT, but she won’t let any marketers on the Twitter account (including herself!). You’ll hear why in this interview.

I also interviewed Vaughn Davis about the kind of advice agencies can give clients about social media. The context of the discussion: Vaughn gets social media. He gets that it is a powerful force for change within an organisation. Which is the rub – as a creative director for an outside agency, his influence is limited inside an organisation. I think he gave a great answer for where to start – why do you want to do this social media stuff?

I interviewed Vaughn and Rebecca at the Social Media Club Auckland, a monthly gathering of anyone who’s interested in social media. Might see you there on the 8th of June.

We’ve covered a very similar subject before with Josie Campbell from The Edge. Josie’s done some pretty awesome things recently using social media.

On a more sombre note, this episode is dedicated to one of New Zealand’s great advocates for social media in the arts and culture sector, Paul Reynolds, who we lost tragically over the weekend. Read one of the many online tributes to Paul.

I had a blast at the Connect Now Conference in Sydney last week. This episode I speak with Deb Schultz from the Altimeter Group. Deb’s a Tummler, and she’s going to explain exactly what that means!

(Watch all the way to the end, it’s worth it!)

Also check out Tummelvision.tv, interviews with Tummlers from around the web.

What do you think? How do develop your own inner Tummler (or cultivate your Tumularity?) – and how does a company groom and prepare Tummlers?

Does your work have meaning? If you run a company, is there meaning in every piece of work?

Equipped to Lead talks about how to create an organisation that treats every stakeholder – from staff to suppliers to management – as real humans with real needs.

What does this have to do with social media? Social media often acts as a window on an organisation. If a culture is unhealthy, that will come out. If the culture is healthy, and people are doing what they love, that will come out – through official and unofficial channels!

The word “engagement” gets thrown around a lot, especially in connection with social media. The Art of Engagement by Jim Hauden has nothing to do with social media, but everything to do with getting everyone on the same page.

Hauden’s company, Root Learning, helps companies engage their staff through collaborative drawings that then get transformed into paintings by professional artists. It’s a unique take on collaboration that overcomes a common communications problem: we say the same words, but mean different things!

How does this connect with social media? Social media has the potential to create the same kind of powerful collaboration, not through paintings but through photos, videos, wordles and other visual stimuli. And again – like last week’s iJumpTV – it comes back not to the technology but to the new skills we must learn.

Have you ever been in a situation where a drawing would have made the difference between success and failure?
