New Zealand the sixth most Twitterous country in the world, 129k users (or is it? See update)

Stats from Sysomos’ research on Twitter use show that New Zealand is the sixth most Twitterous (I made that word up) nation on Earth.

According to some quick maths by Nate, that means there are 129,000 Twitter accounts registered in New Zealand. And judging by the numbers of new followers from New Zealand, that’s growing every day.

But, as Duncan’s question pointed out, how many of those users are active? We don’t know.

But if you’re looking for influential Twitterers, check out Twitter Grader’s Twitter elite. It’s interesting that while we have a lot of Twitterers, according to the Sysomos research above, our quality is only 18th on the list.

    Bullocks. Where is the data? 129,000 is a joke. I’ve been watching Tweets in Tauranga for the last 3 weeks very closely, there are about 30 of us out of a population of 100,000. That’s 0.0375% not 3%. Somebody put the decimal point in the wrong place.

    Furthermore, Mashable says that 60% of Twitters Quit in the first month.

    Data comes from http://www.sysomos.com/insidetwitter/, where they analysed over 11.5 million Twitter accounts. Perhaps Tauranga is only a tenth as Twitterous as the rest of New Zealand (given the demographics, I wouldn’t be surprised).

    129,000 is a round number, thanks to @natobasso who did the maths to figure out that’s 3% of the population of NZ according to Statistics NZ.

    And that stat is just a moment in time; as you say, 60% of Twitter users do quit in the first month. It is a dramatically underused service.

    Ah excellent thanks for the reference. But New Zealand isn’t on their list of the top 10 twitter countries: http://www.sysomos.com/insidetwitter/#countries.

    It looks like we are 16th with 0.5% of the worlds Tweeters: http://www.watblog.com/2009/07/21/twitter-stats-by-sysomos-an-analysis/

    I think a more realistic number is 11.5 Million (the number of Twitter accounts Sysomos analysed) x 0.5% = 57,500 members in NZ. Not 129,000.

    Thanks Sheldon, that’ll teach me to rely on the article about the original findings rather than digging into the original findings! Very odd that Ross Dawson (the blogger I linked to) didn’t seem to check the Sysomos list you linked to. Either that or he used different numbers and/or methodology. Thanks for pointing that out!
